Class Exercise: Review of Story By Archie and Sarah Jan/Feb 2004
Question Choose a short story which you enjoyed reading and explain why it appealed to you.
Answer I have recently read a story called Chon by Jackson and Quintanilla which I enjoyed. I enjoyed the story of Chon because it was about a lady called Mary who was divorced. She has two children. They live out in the country. She works in the town and has to get a bus which is not very reliable. All these things make me feel sorry for Mary. One day, when Mary was on her way to get the bus, a spaceship appeared. Someone came out and asked if Mary was Chon. They wanted to give Chon a gift of gold. Mary said, “No, I’m not Chon”. Then it happened again. This time it was a gift of diamonds. Again Mary said “No, I’m not Chon”. Then another spaceship came with another gift. This time Mary said she was Chon and took the gift. I felt pleased that Mary accepted the gift because she deserved it as she was honest and hard working. Another reason appealed to me was because he or she was a mystery man or woman and that made me feel excited and left me wanting to read on to find out more. At the end of the story I was still left with some questions to be answered. The ending was satisfying but it was also thought provoking because it left you thinking about all sorts of possibilities about Chon and about Mary’s gift. I also enjoyed the ending because I was happy for Mary getting a just reward for her honesty and I also liked it because the sudden ending was unexpected and made me happy. I hope that Mary and her children will have much happiness with the gift she took and that their lives will be a lot easier. Mary will have the freedom that she always wanted. For all these reasons I enjoyed reading Chon. By Archie and Sarah |
