Personal Experience

I had an experience when I was eight years old.   My friend and I went into the grounds of a high school just around the corner where I live.   The gate was open so we went in.   I suppose I must have been a bit sensitive after the death of my sister when I was seven.   Anyway my friend went outside and I was left inside the grounds.

Suddenly a black figure appeared from out of the light.   It was a man dressed in black.   I thought, “I must follow him to see what he’s up to.”

Just as I was about to I heard a voice say, “Don’t follow him Mary.”

I ignored it and carried on.   The figure walked around the corner of the building.   I looked around.   He was just standing with his head down.   I watched him for a few seconds.   Then I took my eyes off him for a second and he burst like a bubble.   I heard the noise.   He was gone.   All that was left was a small bit of smoke.

I was in shock.   I suddenly felt scared.   He turned into shadow and walked through the glass doorway.   I thought he might sense me there so I ran away.

I had a repeated nightmare about a man coming up the stairs in my house.   I had this nightmare for five years   Later when I was twelve I broke my leg.   That’s when the nightmares ended.

A few years later, when I was in my twenties, I discovered that the school was a hospital for soldiers during World War Two.
