Costa Camlachie For a few years now I have wanted to trace my roots. My father is always saying that we have Spanish ancestors. Having sallow skin and a bad temper. He is always kidding me on saying that’s where I get it from. I started going to English classes about a year ago and mentioned to Lindsay my tutor I was interested. She had researched hers and she got me on the right track. She said you find your ancestors all over the place in nice wee villages. As it happened my mother’s cousin made it easy by doing their side. I was fascinated to find out where we came from. My mother had come from Springburn. Well no surprise four generations back they’re still in Springburn. Ok I’ll look up my father’s side as it will be more exciting with the Spaniards, “or so I think”. I get on the computer and start looking up grandparents. It’s really great to see the old certificates come up on the screen. Trying to read them can be difficult as they tend to be hand written. My father had come from Dennison so no shocker they came from that area too. It was call Camlachie. Well I certainly hadn’t heard of it but its in Glasgow near Dennison. It wasn’t quite the lovely wee place Lindsay said I’d find. Still early days. I go back about three or four generations and where do you think they came from? Yip Camlachie Glasgow!! Not a Spaniard in sight! 1830 I go back to and, Hurrah!! I get out of Glasgow. But just 5 miles away in Barrhead. Not to worry I did found some unusual names one being my great great granny her name was Jacobina. She was a weaver in Barrhead. Her husband Robert worked on the shipyards and they were the ones that settled in Camlachie. Another funny name was Archibald Bulloch. He is one of my mothers ancestors. He was a farmer so you would think it would be out in the country. No! Fountainwell is outside Springburn. Although it would be countryside in 1781 when he was born. Well so much for the Spanish ancestors I’ll need to keep looking, either that or go to Spain and marry one. Not a bad idea!!! The only Costa I see is the coffee shop! Gillian |
