The Christmas Robin
Robin the Red-breast comes and sits on my window sill in summer and winter, looking for crumbs, cheeky head bobbing about, and gazing about for cats.
If it is safe, he searches for crumbs on the ground. Like other birds, robin has a hard life. But with his cheerful face robin will cheer me up when I am feeling down Robin easily digs up worms with his beak, even when the ground is muddy and sticky after the rain. His bright feathers shine in the dullest day.
But sometimes the other birds come down when they see the Robin picking up his food from the ground. Or sometimes they come down from the sky and try to fight with the robin or other little birds. If I do see them come down when the Robin or other little birds are there, I try to go out and get them away from the other birds as well as from the Robin. When I do come indoors I watch the Robin or Robins from my window.
I love watching any birds, but not blackbirds or crows, and even if my cat is out, they don’t go away. Sometimes my cat can walk about the ground and the birds don’t see her. I can watch them for hours but after they find their food they leave and fly away. I bought a bird table, a tall one, for the birds. Now I can stand and watch the birds feeding from the table. I feel sorry for the wonderful little birds. I love them all but they don’t get much food in the frosty cold days.
When it is bitter cold in winter, the poor birds still have to look about for food but they are all in danger from other birds, especially the big birds. I sometimes go out in the snow in bad winters and find a baby bird killed on the snow. Once I picked up the poor, little dead bird, wrapped it in toilet paper and put it in the ground. Before I put it in the ground I said a prayer.
