The Blizzard

It was the middle of January. The farm was only a few miles from Snowdon, on the western slope of the valley. It was seven in the morning when the snow began to fall, very gently. The sheep had to be fed and brought down nearer to the farm buildings. Gwyn loaded up the trailer before setting off. They got wrapped up and made sure that they had all they needed. I’m going to bring the sheep down the hill and make sure we have them all as it looks as if it’s going to be a bad one.

Soon after 11 o’clock, the wind began to pick up. The snow was falling heavily by then and by 12 o’clock you couldn’t see any of the hills or trees around. The snow was like a white sheet in front of the window.

By 3.30, it was already quite dark. The snow lay thick everywhere and the wind continued to pile it up in deep drifts wherever anything got in its way. The snow drifts had piled up by the door and we were snowed in. We had to go out the window to unlock the door way. By nightfall it was getting worse and the whole of the countryside was white. No traffic could get in or out of the countryside. We were stranded in our houses. The only way to get to us was by air, but the wind was still going and there was no way anyone could come and see us. It lasted for three days but after that everything went back to normal.
