A Night on the Town In the 1960s two elegant women were standing on the main street of Broadway of New York. The names of the two women were Sue and Sarah. They had long coats on and fancy hats as well. It seemed that they had been standing for a long time as they were rubbing their hands together.
At last the taxi arrived outside the hotel. Sue handed over the money to the taxi driver and told him to keep the change for a tip. The taxi driver got out and opened the back door for the two ladies to get out. They said their goodbyes and off they went to the entrance of the hotel.
At the hotel they were greeted by large statues at the entrance of the main reception area. They were sparkling with elbow polish in the wood. You could see your face in the marble pillars. There were big lights hanging from the ceiling and a big grand staircase with a bright red carpet.
The doorman came over to the two ladies. They were shown to the ballroom and the doorman took away their coats. They were shown to the long dinner table and when they sat down they were given two menus to see what choices they had for eating, and drinking. Sarah ordered chicken and a glass of wine, and Sue had steak and a glass of red wine.
After they had eaten and drunk their wine they got up and went to the big drawing room, where there were ladies and men present. There was a band playing and a big grand piano as well. The waiter came over and asked the two ladies if they wanted a drink. Both they said they did.
A middle aged man came over and asked Sue if she wanted to dance. She said yes, so up she went to dance. The man came over to dance with Sue because he knew her as they had been working in the same bank before she retired. The man was married but his wife was not well enough to come that night to the hotel.
A woman came over to Sarah as she was sitting by herself. She asked Sarah if she had enjoyed her meal. Sarah said she had. The woman asked Sarah if she had been to the dance before. She said no. The woman asked where Sarah came from.
“I am from New York. Where do you come from yourself?”
“The same,” the woman said. “Have you family?” the woman asked Sarah.
“Yes, I am married and have two children. What about you?”
“I have two children and was married,” the woman replied. “My husband died a few months ago.”
Sarah said, “I am sorry about your loss.”
As the dance finished the woman said to Sarah, “I am away to the toilet. I’ll see you later.”
The evening was drawing to its close and Sue and Sarah got up and got their coats and went to the front entrance to wait for their taxi. When waiting for their taxi they talked about how they both had had a chance to meet other people they knew. The two felt better now, and were glad they had come.
They had both enjoyed themselves - I think!
