A Bit About Me

I was born in Bellshill in 1962. At first I looked like any other baby, then when I couldn't sit up on my own without being propped up, they realised I had a mild form of cerebral palsy. I was brought up in Wishaw but have moved around over the years. I stayed in Carluke for a number of years before moving to Lanark where I now live.

My family are very nice and very helpful. I have a brother, sister-in-law and two nieces, who stay in Lancashire and who I don't see very often, maybe 3-4 times a year. I also have a sister, brother-in-law and nephew, who are very close to me, living in Lanark, which I like very much. My mum and dad are very kind and would do anything for anybody, not just me.

When I was a child, I went to a special school in Motherwell. It was called Fir Park Special. It was a school where disabled children went in those days. There was no mainstream schooling for children with special needs in those days. I didn't really enjoy my first school. I felt it wrapped you up in cotton wool. I mean it did not prepare you for the outside world. Later on I went to an other special school in Govan, which covered secondary education. I enjoyed it a bit better than my first school, but to be truthful, my schooldays were not the best. I have learnt more since I left school.

When I was younger, I wanted to work in an office. I still do, but feel my disability is holding me back from doing so. However, I wouldn't change a thing, because I have the best family and they are very kind. They are all Christians and my only one hope and faith for the future is that we will all be in Heaven together one day.

Heather.

Thanks Heather

Not a bad thing to say about anyone, I notice.

Also, I reckon you're a 'weel kent' face in Lanark as you go up and down the High Street.

And it's good to hear you like living in Lanark and also that you have a goal in life- go for it pal.
