Reading and
writing
Last night Wendy and I celebrated our anniversary with our friends.
No, we are not married, I attend a class for reading and writing and
Wendy is my tutor, we have been together for nine years. I get on well
with Wendy. Wendy shows me how to read and write. She explains different
things to me.
The lady I spoke to asked all about myself. I told her about my problem
with my reading and writing. She told me all about the night school at
Larkhall. I felt a lot happier when she told me all about night school at
Larkhall.
I went to night class for the first time and when I came through the door
everybody looked at me. I was very nervous on that first night. Eileen
took me into a classroom by myself and I had to do a test. I had to spell
my name but I could not do it. I felt embarrassed because I could not do
it. I felt better by the end of the night. I had to start at the first
page of the alphabet and I’m on the next stage, it is harder now but I
will get there in the end.
I have come a long way with my tutor Wendy, now I can read the newspaper
and my Mum helps me when I need a little hand. Some of my stories are very
interesting to read, I wish I had done this years ago. It feels fantastic
to read and write.
Now I enjoy reading books. I really like a book called Agatha Christie.
My life has changed a lot since I came to the class. I can help my niece
Alexandra aged seventeen with her reading.
What I want to do now is read more books. I want to learn new words with
my tutor Wendy. It feels great to read and write.
Wendy is a very good tutor, we have got on very well with each other.
Wendy has been with me all the time, she is a very nice person to work
with.
I can pick up the newspaper now and read it. I could not do this years
ago. The night school has finished now until August but I will still
be writing when I go back.

Duncan,
Thanks for the story, this should
encourage people because you make the learning sound enjoyable. Was the
book really called Agatha Christie, or was it written by her?
Please let me know.
