Forty Years On

I'll tell you this, all of a sudden I was paralysed in the hospital. I was unconscious for a fortnight in Hairmyres and then I waken up and I say "Right, I want to go to the bathroom" and all of a sudden, I fell. I can't speak, I can't walk and I can't talk. And that's tough.

This was forty years ago. Since then I've learnt to walk, talk and work - but reading and writing was a no-go area.

I retired and went to the library in East Kilbride and asked the staff about a literacy class. Then it starts.

Three and a half years on I've learnt sufficient to understand the rules and regulations and it's coming. Fifty percent there, fifty percent to go. Two years ago it was taking it's time but this year it's taken off. I'm delighted in so far as, if I can write again I can start writing very dry letters to the government!

Olaf, a very powerful article and I am pleased that this year you are flying high.

I'd like to see examples of the very dry letters you send to the Government.

I hope you don't mind, but I added a title to your article.
