Guy Fawkes Night

This is celebrated on 5th November.

Guy Fawkes was a man who tried to blow up the houses of Parliament on the 5th November 1605. He did not like what the king was doing, so, with a group of friends, he decided to kill him.

Today they would be called terrorists, or even freedom fighters. They got 36 barrels of gunpowder, (also used in making fireworks), and hid them in a cellar under the Houses of Parliament in London.

But one of the group felt guilty - felt it was wrong - and sent a letter to a friend, who was a member of parliament, warning him not to come to the parliament that day, stressing that he should stay away.

The letter reached the King and his soldiers rushed to the cellar where they caught Guy Fawkes with the gunpowder. He was tortured and executed – (killed).

That night a bonfire was lit to celebrate the safety of the King and since then, every 5th November, bonfires are lit - with fireworks, and a figure called the Guy is burned on top of the fire.

A few days before the 5th November you might find young people at your door asking for a penny for the Guy. They are looking for money to help to build a Guy to put on the bonfire.

I wonder how many realise what they are celebrating, especially the younger ones.
