A Village Education

Primary school in Thailand started at the age of 7. I attended the village school in Banpha, Burriaram. The school ran from 9am to 4pm. It was a simple but practical education up to the age of thirteen. Very few children ever took their education further, as they would be expected to work on the rice farms. My parents supplied me with a uniform and a pencil and book, as the school was not well-stocked.

The teachers were strict; it didn’t take much to be sent out to the yard to stand in the sun for an hour. Although I understand these barbaric disciplines have now been outlawed, looking back, it wasn’t too bad, and I do have a lot of happy memories. In many ways education is just like life – it’s what you make of it that counts.

And not a truer word was spoken.

In most cases, it is indeed what you make of it.

Mind you, many people look back at their education and find it a difficult experience.
